Accumulation of independent cultural traits.

چکیده
In a species capable of (imperfect) social learning, how much culture can a population of a given size carry? And what is the relationship between the individual and the population? In the first study of these novel questions, here we develop a mathematical model of the accumulation of independent cultural traits in a finite population with overlapping generations.

Cumulative cultural dynamics and the coevolution of cultural innovation and transmission: an ESS model for panmictic and structured populations.
When individuals in a population can acquire traits through learning, each individual may express a certain number of distinct cultural traits. These traits may have been either invented by the individual himself or acquired from others in the population. Here, we develop a game theoretic model for the accumulation of cultural traits through individual and social learning. We explore how the ra...
متن کاملCultural assemblages show nested structure in humans and chimpanzees but not orangutans.
The evolution of hominin culture is well-documented in the archeological and fossil record, but such a record is largely absent for nonhuman primates. An alternative approach to studying cultural evolution is to examine patterns of modern cultural variation. In this article we measure nestedness across human and great ape "cultural repertoires" to gain insight into the accumulation and maintena...
متن کاملOn the number of independent cultural traits carried by individuals and populations.
In species subject to individual and social learning, each individual is likely to express a certain number of different cultural traits acquired during its lifetime. If the process of trait innovation and transmission reaches a steady state in the population, the number of different cultural traits carried by an individual converges to some stationary distribution. We call this the trait-numbe...
متن کاملThe Cultural Evolution of Adaptive-trait Diversity when Resources are uncertain and Finite
In this paper we seek to build on existing mathematical studies of cultural change by exploring how the diversity of adaptive cultural traits evolves by innovation and cultural transmission when the payoff from adopting traits is both uncertain and frequency dependent. The model is particularly aimed at understanding the evolution of subsistence trait diversity, since the payoff from exploiting...
متن کاملThe Role of Stability in Cultural Evolution: Innovation and Conformity in Implicit Knowledge Discovery
One of the defining traits of humanity is our capacity for accumulating innovations. While many authors focus on the innovation process itself, Evolutionary Anthropology has become more interested in the accumulation part of this uniqueness, and in particularly whether something like an evolutionary account of cultural acquisition can explain it. In this chapter I discuss the role and sources o...
